Job Summary:
The Head Brewer is responsible for the management of the brewery, including brewing, fermentation, cellaring, packaging, and cleaning. The Head Brewer will manage a team of brewers and packagers and ensure the production of high-quality products.

Responsibilities:

The Head Brewer oversees the brewing process, manages the brewing team, ensures product quality, and maintains operational efficiency.

Brewing Operations Management:

  • Plan, manage, supervise and participate in all aspects of the brewing process.
  • Plan the work schedule for the production team 2 weeks in advance.
  • Plan and adjust BREWW production schedule for every change or new batch. Record all production output in BREWW.
  • Create and implement brewing recipes to create consistent and high-quality products.
  • Develop best practices in the use of our ERP system Breww.
  • Monitor and adjust brewing parameters such as temperature, pH, and yeast pitching rate to achieve consistency and high yield for each batch.
  • Coordinate the production team to ensure smooth workflow and timely production schedules.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of brewing equipment and technologies to optimize brewing efficiency.
  • Quality Control:
    • Establish and enforce quality control procedures to ensure the consistency and excellence of the brewery’s products.
    • Conduct regular sensory evaluations of beer to monitor quality standards.
    • Identify and address any deviations from quality standards and take corrective actions as necessary.
    • Maintain records of quality control data, batch logs, and other relevant documentation through Breww.
  • Team Management:
    • Lead and manage a team of brewers, packagers, and other brewery staff.
    • Provide training, guidance, and professional development opportunities for team members.
    • Delegate tasks effectively, oversee work performance, and ensure a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Inventory and Supply Chain Management:
    • Manage raw material inventory, including malt, hops, yeast, and other brewing ingredients.
    • Coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely procurement of brewing materials while optimizing costs.
    • Monitor inventory levels and anticipate material needs to prevent production disruptions.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Enforce and develop safety protocols and best practices to ensure a safe working environment for all brewery personnel.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to brewing, alcohol production, and workplace safety.
  • Recipe Development and Innovation:
    • Collaborate with the partner customers and marketing to develop new beer recipes and experimental brews.
    • Stay updated on industry trends and innovations, including beer, seltzers, RTDs and alcohol free drinks, new brewing techniques, and ingredients, continuously seeking opportunities for process improvement and product innovation.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    • Oversee regular maintenance and cleaning of brewing equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure consistent operation.
    • Coordinate repairs and upgrades as needed to maintain production efficiency.
  • Budget and Financial Management:
    • Participate in budget planning and manage brewing-related expenses to meet financial goals.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising product quality.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Communicate with other departments, such as marketing and sales, to align brewing activities with business goals.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to plan events, promotions, and releases related to brewery products.
  • Environmental Sustainability:
    • Implement sustainable brewing practices, waste reduction, and energy efficiency initiatives.

Customer Engagement:

  • Develop relationships with our contract brewers and key customers to ensure the products match their expectations and refine them as needed.
  • Public Engagement:
    • Represent the brewery at events, festivals, and tastings, engaging with customers to share your brewing expertise and passion for craft beer.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Continuously evaluate and refine brewing processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and overall performance.
